SSS: the state border between South Ossetia and Georgia is turning back into a front line
The State Security Service of Abkhazia made a statement.

Sukhum. September 3. Apsnypress. The State Security Service of Abkhazia issued a statement in connection with situation on the border of South Ossetia and Georgia.

 The statement says:

“The State Security Service of the Republic of Abkhazia is closely monitoring the situation on the South Ossetian-Georgian state border in the village of Whista (Tsnelis) of Znaurskiy district of the Republic of South Ossetia.

A sharp escalation of tension there took place on August 24, after Georgia arbitrarily established a checkpoint in the immediate vicinity of the Ossetian settlement and introduced force units into the area. On September 1, under the pretext of fighting an unmanned aerial vehicle, Georgian security forces opened fire in the direction of South Ossetia. The Ossetian side did not respond to the provocation and did not open return fire. Nevertheless, as a result of the use of firearms in the adjacent territory, a dangerous precedent was created, which in the future could have the most serious consequences.

Observing the situation from Sukhum, we see how the state border between South Ossetia and Georgia again turns into a front line and the reason for this is the irresponsible and aggressive policy of Tbilisi. It is unambiguously clear that the very presence of the Georgian security forces and their checkpoint near the South Ossetian settlement can lead to an open armed confrontation and, as a result, to human casualties.

We hope that the actions of Georgia will not go unnoticed by representatives of the European Union Observer Mission (EUMM) present at the scene of the incident, who in such cases are required to take measures to remove the preconditions for further escalation of the conflict.

We believe that the only way out of this situation can only be the withdrawal of Georgian security forces from the village Whista and the liquidation of a checkpoint previously arranged there. This measure will allow all parties to return to the negotiation regime in the future, to remove contentious issues and tensions.

Taking this opportunity, the State Security Service of the Republic of Abkhazia recalls that Georgia does not respond to the proposals of Abkhazia to begin a process of civilized discussion of issues of crossing the state border, its delimitation and demarcation. This circumstance does not contribute to normalizing the situation, strengthening confidence-building measures between our states and openly demonstrates the aggressive intentions of our neighbor. ”
